Rivian Forums Owners Club - R1T Pickup and R1S SUV Forum

The Rivian Owners Forums are now back online! The forums were offline for awhile as can be seen by the legacy threads and member communications, but hopefully we can begin growing again and be a great outlet for all current and future Rivian owners without being force fed ads all in your face as other forums out there do.

Panel displays

To the Rivian designers responsible for ergonomics and safety - a plea for the return of a bit of sanity.

Background -
In the last decade I have seen many automobile manufacturers' preferences change, favoring aesthetics to the detriment of safety and ease of use.

I am the owner of a 2019 Ram 1500. My wife and I are retired. I bought the Ram for the air suspension, so we could enjoy ease of access and egress, and the smooth ride it provides, while we're on the road. I expect to buy the R1T.

The Ram has a 12" screen in the center of the dash.
There is a thumbwheel to adjust instrument panel brightness, but only if the headlights are switched on. If the headlights are switched off, brightness defaults to maximum and there is no possibility to adjust.
To change brightness of the 12" center display, one must get into a submenu on the display and trial-and-error fiddle with brightness level settings. There are separate level settings for headlights off and headlights on. When headlights are switched on, the display automatically dims into a "night time mode." This is poorly implemented from a safety aspect, as attention must be diverted from the task of safely operating a motor vehicle to make brightness adjustments for changing conditions.
For an example of how annoying this really is, have a look at this link.

Please consider making changing the brightness of the driver display and the center display as easy as turning a small knob or dial, preferably a separate control for each, that can be easily accessed by the driver without requiring the driver to take attention from the road. Many will thank you for allowing quick and easy changes that eliminate possible driving distractions caused by panel brightness.

I'm with you 100% on this. It's the same story with the Tesla. It has two thumbwheels on the steering wheel currently. A couple more for the brightness of the two displays would be most convenient and safe and there is plenty of real estate for them.
